MALAGA MARATHON 2026
In December 2025, the MALAGA BIKE team was right in the heart of the Málaga Marathon buzz. No, we didn’t actually run (not that year, anyway 😉). Instead, we opened the shop early to rent out bikes to runners heading to the start line and to their supporters—those heroes with motivational signs, energy drinks, and snacks who follow friends and family along the course and keep spirits high.

Carry your motivational signs on a bike with a basket and cheer on your friends in the marathon!
Throughout the morning, we took turns slipping away from the shop to watch the marathon pass through different parts of this beautiful city. The atmosphere was electric: music, cheering, determination, emotion, and just good vibes everywhere. In fact, it was so inspiring that two of us have since committed to taking part in the 2026 Málaga Marathon. But more on that later…
WHEN IS THE 2026 MALAGA MARATHON?
The 2026 Málaga Marathon and Half Marathon will take place a little earlier than in previous years, on Sunday, 8th November 2026.
This date offers an excellent chance of ideal running conditions, with an expected average temperature of around 18°C—perfect for chasing a PB (personal best) or simply enjoying the run.
👉 Registration is already open, so what are you waiting for? Sign up now and start counting down to November 8th!
HOW IS THE MALAGA MARATHON COURSE?
The Málaga Marathon is famous for being flat, fast, and incredibly scenic. The course showcases the city’s main historical landmarks, the coastline, and traditional fishermen’s neighbourhoods.
Both the start and finish line are located in front of Málaga City Hall, along the leafy boulevard of Paseo del Parque. Runners have 5 hours and 30 minutes to complete the marathon.
🎥 Get inspired and follow the route!
The Route in Detail
As you will have seen in the video, the course begins by heading east along Paseo del Parque and the port, continuing toward Pedregalejo and El Palo—two of Málaga’s most traditional seaside neighbourhoods, still deeply connected to their fishing roots.
From there, the route loops back toward the city centre and heads north, passing by La Rosaleda Stadium, home of Málaga F.C. The marathon then stretches west along the coast, turning just before the Guadalhorce Natural Reserve, and continues past the Palacio de Deportes Martín Carpena and the Málaga Athletics Stadium.
The final kilometres are pure magic: runners pass through the beautiful historic city centre, including the stunning main square of the city Plaza de la Constitución and the iconic main street of Calle Marqués de Larios, before returning to Paseo del Parque for a spectacular finish in El Parque with the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle providing the perfect backdrop.

Congratulations- you’re about to cross the finish line of the MALAGA MARATHON!
If this hasn’t convinced you yet… let’s dive a little deeper into the world of marathon madness.
HOW LONG IS A MARATHON?
A marathon is one of the most iconic events in athletics, attracting millions of runners worldwide every year. The classic marathon distance is 42.195 kilometres, but there are many variations, including:
- Half marathons (21 km)
- Trail marathons
- Wheelchair marathons
- And many more
There truly is a marathon format for everyone.
WHY RUN A MARATHON?
People run marathons for countless reasons. You might be:
- An experienced runner seeking a new challenge
- Trying to beat a personal record
- Wanting to improve your fitness
- Running for the atmosphere and community
- Or simply chasing that finisher’s medal
Marathons take place all year round, in cities, along coastlines, through mountains, and across deserts. They welcome everyone—every age, every pace, every story.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MARATHON
The modern marathon first appeared in 1896 at the inaugural Olympic Games in Athens. The now-standard distance of 42.195 km wasn’t officially fixed until 1921.
The event was inspired by a legend from Ancient Greece, following the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. According to the story, a messenger named Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens—around 40 km—to announce victory over the Persian army.
Unfortunately, legend has it that after delivering the message, he collapsed and died.
(Dear future marathon runner: let’s focus on the running part… and ignore the ending!)

Today, millions of runners honour that legendary effort every year—and happily live to tell the tale😅.
WHAT ARE THE MOST FAMOUS MARATHONS?
Six races stand at the very top of the marathon world:
- Tokyo
- Berlin
- London
- Chicago
- New York
- Boston
Together, they form the World Marathon Majors (WMM)—a prestigious global series that attract elite athletes and amateur runners alike.

WMM’s are experiencing record participation
Entry alone is a huge achievement, often requiring qualification times, lottery selection, or charity fundraising. And the scale is enormous: for example, 59,226 runners completed the 2025 New York City Marathon, setting a new world record for participation.
THE BEAUTY OF “SMALLER” MARATHONS
Running a less famous marathon doesn’t mean less magic—quite the opposite.
Smaller events often offer:
- Less logistical stress
- Lower registration fees
- Affordable accommodation close to the start
- No 4 a.m. wake-up calls for transport

Of course, crowds may be smaller, but they’re closer, warmer, and more personal. However, the atmosphere feels genuine and inclusive. You’ll find runners of all generations and abilities: people running for fun, for friendship, for fitness, or for a personal goal—alongside a few professionals chasing fast times.
ARE THERE OTHER RACE OPTIONS IN MALAGA?
Absolutely. If the full marathon feels like too much (or too soon), Málaga has plenty of alternatives.
Alongside the marathon, you can also run the Half Marathon. In recent years, the organisers have added parallel events such as:
- Brunch Run (5 km): a relaxed, social run held the day before the marathon, finishing with a big communal brunch
- Kids Run: races for children of all ages, promoting fitness and the marathon spirit
And if November doesn’t work for you, the Costa del Sol offers more options:
- TotalEnergies Málaga Half Marathon – mid-March
- Torremolinos Half Marathon – early February, with a beautiful coastal route
